About Primal
What is Primal Fitness?
Primal Fitness is a small group personal training gym in Killingworth, Newcastle upon Tyne, in North Tyneside. Since 2014 we've coached people of every age and fitness level in small groups of at most 8, with a personal trainer leading every session. It's owned by Chris Grieveson.
Is Primal a normal gym?
No. It's a small group personal training gym: a private coaching studio in Killingworth with no crowds, no mirrors and no egos, and a coach at every session.
What are your opening hours?
Monday to Friday 6:00am to 8:30pm, Saturday 7:00am to 12:00pm, and closed on Sundays.
How much does it cost?
That depends on your goals, how often you'd like to train, and the kind of support you're after. We'll figure all that out on the call so we can build something that works for you. No surprise prices.
How big are the groups?
Small group personal training is at most 8 people and lasts 60 minutes. Team training (strength and conditioning, HIIT and boxercise) is up to 20 people and lasts 45 minutes.
Do you do one-to-one personal training?
Yes. If a group isn't right for you yet, a coach can work with you one-to-one, at your own pace. Ask us about it on your call.
Can I just turn up?
Sessions are booked in advance on TeamUp, our booking app, so there's always a coach and a space waiting for you. If you're new, start with a quick call and we'll get you set up.
How old do I need to be?
Members are 18 or over, and 16 and 17 year olds can train with written parental consent. There's no upper limit: Paul started with us at 79.
How do I get started?
Start with the 6 Week Challenge. Pop your details in on our website or ring 07810 447305, and we'll book a quick, no-pressure call. Then a movement assessment, and six weeks of coached sessions with a plan built around you.
The 6 Week Challenge
When are the sessions?
Over 70 a week: Monday to Friday from 6am, through the morning and lunchtime, then from mid-afternoon to the last session at 7:30pm, and Saturday mornings from 7am to 11:30am. We're closed on Sundays. The full timetable is on our timetable page, and you book on TeamUp.
Where is your gym?
Our gym is located in Camperdown Industrial Estate, Killingworth: OES House, Unit 23, Mylord Crescent, Newcastle upon Tyne NE12 5UJ.
Do I have to be fit?
Nope. No matter what your starting point is we'll coach you to get leaner, fitter and stronger over the course of the 6 weeks. Our members vary in age and fitness level. Yes, you'll see some super-fit people here, but they all started somewhere. Your fitness goal is unique to you. We'll assess your current level, personalise your programme and take it at a pace that works for you.
What if I have aches or pains?
No problem. Many of our members come to us with slight joint niggles, so you're in good hands!
What if I register then change my mind?
You'll get your money back. No hassle, no questions, no hard feelings. The thought of forcing anyone into fitness is our worst nightmare.
What happens after the 6 Week Challenge?
It's completely your choice. You can become a full member by choosing the membership option that works best for you or if you decide our gym isn't for you we can part ways with no hard feelings.
What if I need to miss days during the 6 Week Challenge?
Don't worry. If something comes up or you're away for a few days, let us know, and we'll happily extend the trial period.
Weight loss and nutrition
Can you help me lose weight?
Yes. Coached small group training, a nutrition plan that fits your life, complete with a cookbook, and weekly check-ins with your coach. Sam, one of our members, is over two and a half stone down. We focus on results you can keep, not quick fixes.
Is it a strict diet?
No. We focus on a strategy that works with your real life. No miserable crash diets.
Do you help with nutrition?
Yes. Members get our nutrition plan and cookbook, plus short videos and guides on calories, habits, tracking, alcohol and eating out, and recipes for the whole family, vegetarian and vegan too.
Starting in your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond
Is Primal suitable for over 50s?
Yes. Many of our members are in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and some are older: Paul started with no gym experience at 79. Every exercise is scaled to you and a coach leads every session.
What if I have aches, pains or an old injury?
No problem. Many of our members come to us with joint niggles, bad knees, even knee replacements. Your movement assessment on day one finds a way to work around them, so you train safely from the start.
I haven't exercised in years. Is that OK?
Absolutely. Most of our members start as total beginners, and plenty hadn't exercised for years. We start where you are and build from there, at your own pace.
